OREANDA-NEWS. May 30, 2008. The sugar beet growers of the Mary Velayat started sowing sugar beet in the fields released from winter crops. Dozens of the high-powered sowing units were prepared for the campaign.

On the eve of the agricultural campaign the President issued the Resolution aimed at increasing sugar beet and sugar production in the country in accordance with the National Programme Strategy of Economic, Political and Cultural Development of Turkmenistan till 2020. In accordance with the document in 2008 the sugar beet plantations in the Mary Velayat are to occupy 10,000 hectares. The President of Turkmenistan authorised the Marysheker JSC to purchase 26 tons of high yielding hybrid sugarbeet seeds to the sum of US\\$ 310,960.

Mary sugarbeet growers are planning to produce 150,000 tons, which will be processed into sugar, molasses and marc used for producing yeast and spirits, which are of steady demand on the domestic food market.
