OREANDA-NEWS. June 18, 2008. Dmitry Medvedev met with Minister of Telecommunications and Mass Communications Igor Shchegolev and Deputy Chief of Staff of the Presidential Executive Office Alexei Gromov.

The development of television broadcasting in Russia was the subject of discussion.

Discussions centred specifically on moving over to digital television broadcasting, the timetable for this transition, and social measures to protect citizens’ interests during the transition. Mr Medvedev said that these changes should not leave anyone in the country worse off in terms of access to television channels, and nowhere should the number of channels received decrease.

Mr Shchegolev said that the current network will be modernized by 2015 and stringent standards will be introduced regulating the whole chain from production of television programmes to their dissemination and reception.
