OREANDA-NEWS. October 30, 2008.  The forum has revealed certain controversy in relations among Russia, the European Union and the United States: on the one hand, the Georgians (G.Baranidze), the Hungarians (B.Orban), the Poles (A.Zibertowic) an the Americans (B.Gray) appeared with sharp criticism blaming Russia for the last events in the Caucasus, on the other hand, the Europeans signed contracts for importing Russian fuel till 2050.

Still, the key attention was paid to analytical reports. Romanian expert K.Gus said that the NABUCCO pipeline project would be carried out only if Russia joined it. Swedish expert T.Hober presented Sweden’s experience of development of energy strategy. The general opinion was that if nothing is done with energy and climate, by the end of this century 100,000,000 people will have to leave their homes and all resources (gas, oil and uranium) will come to an end.

Energy mix was the key topic of the forum and of the last years. It was the key subject of the report by the key moderator of the “Role of Alternative Sources in Energy Mix” section I.Lobovsky. Lobovsky believes that intensification of international initiatives in the fields of investments, ecology and development programs and openness of information about energy sources and technologies are quite effective solutions to the existing energy problems. But the most effective solution is encouragement of scientific research in the field of renewable and non-renewable energy sources. Global Energy international prize is yet the only organization actively stimulating such research. Among its laureates are ITER, hydrogen power engineering and production of artificial oil.

The forum went off quite well. The hosts pointed out that, even though they were the cleverest nation – as many as 16 Hungarians have won Nobel Prize so far – they were not a great energy power. But the highlight of the forum was the project by the Regional Environmental Center – a clever house producing energy for its own needs.
