OREANDA-NEWS. Kaliningrad Railways and Volkswagen AG begin implementing joint project to ship cars to Russia, the Ruissian Railways press service announced.On October 15, 2007, Kaliningrad Railways received a first consignment of 200 Audis, assembled at Volkswagen’s production plants in Germany, at the Zheleznodorozhny border crossing. Volkswagen executives are expected to observe the reloading procedures at Chernyakhovsk.

The cars will go by trains, using the European narrow-gauge track, to Chernyakhovsk, where RealTransAuto, a Russian Railways’ subsidiary, will reload the cars to Russian broad-gauge wagons by means of specially developed equipment.The route was developed especially for Volkswagen. If the technology proves popular, the volume of cars imported to Russia could increase to two freight trains per day.
