Plushenko Reacts to Hanu's Quadruple Axel
"He's making new history! Here's Yuzuru Hanyu's attempted four-and-a-half axel in training,"- Plushchenko wrote, posting a video of Hanyu's jumps.
Two-time Olympic figure skating champion Yuzuru Hanyu performed several quadruple axels in training before the Japanese championships.
The jump has never before been performed in competition by anyone in history. The 27-year-old Hanyu has previously said he would perform it in the free routine at the national championships.
In training on Thursday Hanyu made several attempts on the quadruple axel, landing three jumps.
The Japanese Championships will be Hanyu's first tournament of the current season. He was forced to miss the Grand Prix series due to an ankle injury. The short program at the Japanese Championships will be performed on December 24, the free skating on December 26.
Hanyu won Olympic gold in singles skating in 2014 and 2018. The Japanese is also a two-time world champion (2014, 2017) and multiple world championship medallist. He is the first single skater in history to win all the adult and junior titles.
Hanyu was the first ever to land a quadruple rittberger in an event in 2016. He is also the first skater to break the 100-point mark in the short programme, 200 points in the free programme and 300 points in the program total. Hanyu currently holds the world record for the short programme points (111.82).
