OREANDA-NEWS  Olympic figure skating champion Anna Shcherbakova fell ill with mononucleosis. Because of this, the athlete, who recently decided to resume her career, was forced to suspend preparations for the season in the group of Eteri Tutberidze, with whom she was at the training camp.

Earlier, the athlete expressed a desire to resume her professional career after missing the 2022/23 season. Shcherbakova was included in the reserve squad of the national team and attended training camps in Novogorsk as part of the Eteri Tutberidze group, under whose leadership she became a figure skating superstar.

Mononucleosis is an acute infectious viral disease in which fever, enlarged lymph nodes, inflammation of the tonsils and an increase in the size of the liver and spleen are possible.

The main danger with mononucleosis is the risk of rupture of the spleen during physical exertion, which is why doctors recommend suspending sports for up to six months.

It is not yet clear how acute the disease is in the figure skater. Usually the disease is treated symptomatically, and those who have had mononucleosis develop antibodies to this infection. At the same time, a sick person becomes a carrier of the virus for the rest of his life.
