Prior to his retirement this year, General Campbell served as commander of the International Security Assistance Force and U.S. forces in Afghanistan. From 2011 to 2014, he was Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations and then Vice Chief of Staff of the Army. His previous assignments included command of the 1st Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division in Afghanistan and the 101st Airborne Division based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, with a tour in Afghanistan as well. He was also deputy commander of the 1st Cavalry Division and Multinational Division Baghdad during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

During his military service, General Campbell earned numerous awards and decorations. These include the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, three Distinguished Service Medals, the Defense Superior Service Medal, two Legions of Merit, three Bronze Star Medals, two Defense Meritorious Service Medals, six Meritorious Service Medals, and two Humanitarian Service Medals.
