OREANDA-NEWS. The Gas Distribution & Utilization Section of the Gazprom Science & Technology Council conducted in Yekaterinburg the Workshop themed ‘Natural Gas Utilization for Railroad Transport’.

Using compressed and liquefied natural gas as a fuel enables to considerably increase the operating viabilities of railroad transport. At present diesel fuel costs for locomotives exceed 30 per cent in Russian Railways’ total expenses. According to Russian Railways’ estimates, diesel fuel substitution by natural gas in the railroad transport sector might reach 1 million tons per year.

The meeting resulted in the approval of Uraltransgaz and Russian Railways’ work to create a gas supply infrastructure for locomotives as stipulated by the Program.
