Commenting on the first quarter production results, Alexander Bulygin, CEO, United Company RUSAL said: “The first quarter of 2007 marks United Company RUSAL’s arrival as the new global leader in aluminium and alumina production. As our production results attest, we have created a strong foundation for further growth with priorities of increased aluminium and alloys production, expanded raw material base, finessed technology, and strengthened energy business. The active development of the sectors that constitute our major client base and the toughening of international environmental legislation offer more opportunities for the use of aluminium as a light metal in our key markets, such as the automotive industry, and secure stable growth in demand for our products. To meet market expectations, we are pursuing the implementation of five large construction projects - including the Boguchanskoye Energy and Metals Complex (a hydropower plant and an aluminium smelter), Taishet Aluminium Smelter in the Irkutsk Region, a bauxite and alumina complex in the Komi Republic, and full-capacity launch of the Khakas Aluminium Smelter that was commissioned in December of last year. Collaboration with Rosatom to create an energy and metals complex based on nuclear power, as well as an active search for other partners to develop key energy projects in Russia and worldwide, reinforce our competitive advantages and help to diversify our business”.
