OREANDA-NEWS. On May 03-04, 2007 TVEL Corporation has taken part in European Nuclear Power Conference conducted in Prague by Platts, reported the press-centre of TVEL. During the conference the deputy executive director of the company V.Troyanov made a report on “Modern Tendencies in Nuclear Fuel Modernization for Eastern European Countries.” Troyanov reported on Russia’s steps for improving its nuclear fuel. He emphasized the advantages of the modernized fuel for WWER-440 reactors that allow NPPs to substantially enhance their efficiency.

Special attention was given to the prospects of the European nuclear power industry. Atomstroyexport also took part in the conference. TVEL pays special attention to nuclear fuel modernization. Particularly, in order to enhance the competitiveness of Russian nuclear fuel on the Czech market, in 2003 TVEL started supplying Dukovany NPP with second generation fuel. The new fuel has allowed the plant to transit from four-year to five-year fuel cycle and, consequently, to save money and room for nuclear waste storage. The economic effect of this transition amounts to billions of Czech korunas. In 2008 all the four units of Dukovany will switch to the new fuel. In 2006 TVEL won a tender for supplying fuel to the second Czech NPP, Temelin. The company will supply TBCA-T, fuel with enhanced hermetic stability and economy.
