OREANDA-NEWS. Hydrogen recobminers manufactured by AREVA NP (Germany) are being installed at the 3rd unit of Kalinin NPP in the framework of planned maintenance. In early June specialists of Rosenergoatom and AREVA NP are planning to visit the plant to see how the work has been done, reported the press-centre of  Rosenergoatom.

Hydrogen recombiners are meant for localizing possible accidents at a nuclear power plant. The problem of hydrogen explosion prevention is very important for an NPP as any controlled or uncontrolled accident may cause emission of hydrogen in dangerously explosive concentration. Hydrogen recombiners are exactly for preventing such emissions: they oxidize hydrogen on the surface of a special catalyst thereby producing water steam and reducing the concentration of hydrogen to non-dangerous level. AREVA NP has supplied hydrogen recombiners to 86 nuclear power units in 16 countries. In 2004 Rosenergoatom Concern installed AREVA passive autocatalytic recombiners at the 1st unit of Kalinin NPP in the framework of TACIS program.
