OREANDA-NEWS. Russia and Myanmar signed an intergovernmental cooperation agreement in Moscow on May 15 2007. The agreement was signed by the head of Rosatom Sergey Kiriyenko and the minister of science and technologies of Myanmar U Thaung.

The sides have agreed to cooperate on the establishment of a center for nuclear studies in the territory of Myanmar (the general contractor will be Atomstroyexport). The center will comprise a 10MW light water reactor working on 20%-enriched uranium-235, an activation analysis laboratory, a medical isotope production laboratory, silicon doping system, nuclear waste treatment and burial facilities.

The center will be controlled by IAEA.

Russian universities are supposed to train 300-350 specialists for the center.

The agreement has already taken effect and will be in force until the sides have met all of their commitments.

The agreement is expected to promote mutually beneficial economic and scientific ties between Russia and Myanmar. Both countries are members of IAEA and signatories to the Nonproliferation Treaty.
