OREANDA-NEWS. August 10, 2007. Kolomensky Zavod (KZ, a CJSC Transmashholding member) has received from the Certification Register for the Federal Railway Transport (RSFJT) the certificate of compliance for 2TE70 freight diesel locomotives of the pilot batch of 14 units ( №№ 003 - 016).
The Kolomensky Zavod production plans for 2007 envisage production of 10 diesel locomotives of the series.

All the pilot batch locomotives will be operational on the East-Siberian Railway. It is noteworthy that the first 2TE70 (2TE70-001) freight diesel locomotive has been under operation at the Ulan-Ude depot since November 2006, and the second 2TE70-002 locomotive – since April 2007. The locomotives lead heavy units of at least 5,500 metric tons in weight.

The third 2TE70 locomotive is manufactured and getting ready for delivery. The B-section of the 2TE70-003 locomotive is the 3,000th locomotive section built at Kolomensky Zavod from the launch of diesel and electric locomotives’ production at the plant.

The new 2TE70 freight locomotive is designed to replace the worn-out 2TE116 and 2TE10 diesel locomotives. The new locomotive has a number of serious advantages over the previous models. The tractive features of the new two-section locomotive are equal to those of the former three-section one. This enables heavy units leading and shorter shipment time.

The new locomotive also cuts exploitation costs due to better fuel and oil efficiency and a microprocessor control and diagnostics system. The locomotive is powered by a new very efficient 2A-9DG-02 diesel-generator with better environment features. The 2TE70 locomotive drivers also note that the working conditions and control are more comfortable, driver’s cab is ergonomic, and noise and vibration rates are lower.
