OREANDA-NEWS. April 1, 2008. The NWTC has realized for the last years a range of important environmental projects at Neman Pulp-and-Paper Mill and Kamennogorsk Offset Paper Mill included into the NWTC. Those were the building of new waste-paper recycling plant, the transfer to TCF- bleaching of cellulose (Totally Chlorine Free), the transfer of the heat station from fuel oil to natural gas, and reconstruction of the bark-boiler. Due to decrease of consumption of natural resources, steam and power, and refusal of chlorine, decrease of waste water discharges and emissions into the air, and the recycling of wastes, the enterprises have decreased the negative impact on the environment.

Due to the transfer of the heat stations of NPPM and KOPM to natural gas and reconstruction of the bark-boiler at NPPM the carbon dioxide emissions (CO2) have been decreased by more than 100 thousand tones per year. “That is a very significant figure that means the complete correspondence of the NWTC’s activity to Kyoto Protocol. The NWTC has become the second enterprise in the Russian pulp-and-paper industry that performs such projects and is able to come to the market of trade in quotas on greenhouse gas emissions”, the representative of CAMCO Michail Julkin said.

According to VI Section of Kyoto Protocol the NWTC has the right to exchange the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions for the credit on the future environmental projects for example. “We are very interested in that. We have started the realization of the program for 2008-2012 at the Group of Enterprises including the construction of the joint complex of waste water treatment facilities for the city of Neman and NPPM, and the start-up of the second bark-boiler, the transfer to commercial dry lignosulfonates, and the reconstruction of cooking department and wood-stock department at NPPM as well”, the Chairperson of Board of Directors of the NWTC Irina Bitkova said.

Only the sale of reduction of greenhouse gas emissions of NPPM and KOPM alone can give the NWTC about 6 million EUR that will promote the new environmental projects.
