OREANDA-NEWS. April 8, 2008. In January-March, 2008, throughput of port Kavkaz fell by 5.48%, year-on-year, to 1.146.81 million tonnes. In the reported period, transshipment of export cargo amounted to 884,370 tonnes (-5.44%, year-on-year), import fell by 5.6% to 262,440 tonnes. In the first quarter of 2008 the port handled 295,320 tonnes of general cargo, 833,530 tonnes of oil products. In the reported period the port handled 405 vessels (-12%, year-on-year).

Port Kavkaz is situated at the border of the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov at Kerch Strait from the side of Russia. The port is ice-free, so it is able to handle both river vessels (draft of up to 5 meters) and sea vessels (off-harbor handling of vessels with a draft of up to 11 meters). The territory of the port is crossed by a 2,600-meter long railway line. The port handles loose cargo, as well as general cargo and timber.
