OREANDA-NEWS. June 18, 2008. In Russia nuclear materials are strongly protected from terrorists, the deputy foreign minister of Russia Sergey Kislyak said during a press-conference in Madrid on Tuesday evening.

He was among the participants in the 4th meeting of the Global Initiative to Combat Nuclear Terrorism in Madrid.

He said that one must never be fully satisfied with his security systems as there is always a way to break a safety system. Russia and the United States are constantly improving their security systems so as to ensure guaranteed protection of their nuclear materials.

“We cooperate with many other countries in this field as nuclear materials stolen in one place can appear in any other place on the globe,” Kislyak said.

He said that the global initiative to combat nuclear terrorism was put forward by US President George Bush and Russian President Vladimir Putin during the G8 meeting in St.Petersburg in June 2006. Even though the initiative is very young, more and more countries are joining it as more and more people are beginning to realize that terrorism is a challenge to each rather than some individual country. Terrorism is a problem requiring global response.
