OREANDA-NEWS. June 26, 2008. The fuel was supplied in the form of fuel assemblies containing 4.1% enriched uranium-235. The fuel is enough for the initial launch of one reactor and its refueling after one year of operation.

The deliveries were carried out in close compliance with the contract and the requirements of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The fuel was fabricated by subsidiary of TVEL OJSC, Novosibirsk Chemical Concentrate Plant, where it was stored before delivery.

Deputy Director General of NCCP Konstantin Grabelnikov says that the fuel has been produced in full compliance with the requirements of the plant’s integrated quality management system.

The delivery of the fuel has confirmed the compliance of the Russian party with the contract. Atomstroyexport CJSC has already delivered over 83% of necessary equipment and 98% of necessary project documentation. Presently, the Indian party is carrying out installation and start-up work.

“The persistence of our Indian colleagues, who are building WWER-1000 reactors for the first time, is worthy of respect. They are showing enviable diligence and zeal,” says Mikhail Klonitsky, the deputy chief engineer of Atomenergoproekt (Moscow), one of the designers of Kudankulam NPP. “They might have gone the easy way and ordered a “turnkey” project but they preferred building the reactors themselves.”
