OREANDA-NEWS. June 26, 2008. Today, the Expert Council for Legislative Support of the Nuclear Industry of the Energy Committee of the State Duma considered draft law on treatment of radioactive waste.

The vice chairman of the Energy Committee Konstantin Zaytsev, the member of the Federation Council Vyacheslav Novikov, representatives of executive authorities and leading research companies, managers and experts of Rosatom State Nuclear Energy Corporation took part in the work of the Council.

The law says that the Government should create a united radioactive waste treatment system as the key guarantor of safety in the peaceful use of nuclear energy. Unlike the existing fragmentary regulations in the field of radioactive waste treatment, this law is a complex instrument for regulation of relations among all sectors of the economy in the field of radioactive waste treatment.

The law says that the state is supremely responsible for the safe treatment of radioactive waste. It differentiates the duties of the state, the producers of radioactive waste and the organizations specializing in its treatment and specifies the national control agency and the national operators in the field.

The Expert Council has decided to approve the basic ideas and principles of the law.
