OREANDA-NEWS. July 24, 2008. Public hearings on the assessment of the effects the branch of Rosenergoatom Concern, the Department for the Construction of Rostov Nuclear Power Plant may have on the environment while collecting, using, treating, transporting and storing hazardous (non-radioactive) waste have been held at the Information Center of Volgodonsk Nuclear Power Plant.

Relevant document were available for local residents at the center.

Representatives of the local authorities and public organizations attended the hearings.

The conduct of the hearings was necessitated by changes in the existing legislation and the requirements for obtaining a license for treatment of hazardous (non-radioactive) waste of 1–5 categories.

The treatment of hazardous waste requires special safety, sanitary and fire safety measures as well as measures for prevention of emergencies that may produce unplanned types of waste or more restricted types of waste.

The measures carried out by the Department for collection, use, temporary storage and transportation of waste show that the plant has no negative effect on the environment. The Department has surveillance, visual control and laboratory control systems in all of its temporary storage facilities.
