OREANDA-NEWS. On July 23, 2008 XXIV Universal Postal Union Congress was opened in Geneva (Switzerland). The Congress gathered the delegates and national postal operators from the UPU’s 191 member countries, reported the press-centre of Russian Post. 

The Congress is the supreme authority of the Union to discuss the results of world postal sector’s activities for the last 4 years and set the main development trends for the next 4 period. Russian Federation is presented by I.O. Schegolev, Minister of Mass Communication and Mass Media, A.I. Kazmin, General Director of FSUE Russian Post and representatives of the Ministry and Russian Post.

In his report at the Plenary Assembly of the Congress I.O. Schegolev noted two main current trends of world postal development: globalization and fiercer competition. Due to this coordinated actions within the framework of the general plan of all member countries for 2009-2012 are of core importance for postal administrations’ adaptation to socio-economic conditions and further development of post. "Nairobi Postal Strategy can become the base for the plan". The Strategy was worked out by the UPU Strategic Planning Group headed by the RF", noted I.O. Schegolev.

New Universal Postal Strategy is to be adopted summarizing the results of XXIV Universal Postal Union Congress. The participants are also to set the structure, choose UPU leading members and the head of the Union.

I.O. Schegolev, Minister of Mass Communication and Mass Media, A.I. Kazmin, General Director of FSUE Russian Post and E.Dayan, Director-General of UPU held meeting before the Opening of the Congress. E. Dayan highly appreciated work of the Russian Federation both within the framework of UPU and Strategic Planning Group headed by the RF for the last 4 years. E. Dayan also emphasized that Russian Post contributed much to international postal financial services development.
