OREANDA-NEWS. September 16, 2008. During its meeting on Friday, Sept 12 2008, the Public Council of Rosatom State Nuclear Energy Corporation approves the ecological policy of the Corporation, the advisor of the director general of Rosatom Vladimir Grachyov said during a press-conference.

This policy is Rosatom’s basic document in the field of environment protection as ecology is an important component of the use of nuclear energy.

Grachyov says that Rosatom has been drafting this document since the very first day of its existence. As a result, the policy complies with all relevant international standards. The policy is based on the following principles: compliance with the laws on ecological safety, openness, accessibility of information, prevention of ecological accidents.

Grachyov pointed out that the strategic goal of Rostom is to ensure the safety of the peaceful use of nuclear energy especially as nuclear power is the most ecologically friendly source of energy. Today, there are 250 legal entities in Russia’s nuclear industry – 104 of them are big companies. Each of them has nuclear waste. Grachyov said that in Dec Rosatom was planning to hold a dialogue-forum on ecological safety in the nuclear sector.
