OREANDA-NEWS. October 15, 2008. In January-September, 2008, Kaliningrad Sea Commercial Port OJSC handled 3.684.6 million tonnes of cargo (+5.3%, year-on-year), the port reported.

In the reported period, transshipment of export cargo amounted to 2.698.7 million tonnes (+3.3%) including 185,100 tonnes of heavy fuel oil (down 1.7 times against the same period of the previous year), 774,900 tonnes of coal (up 2.3 times), 120,300 tonnes of containerized cargo (-15.3%).

Transportation of import cargo grew by 11.2%, year-on-year, to 985,900 tonnes including 454,000 tonnes of construction materials (up 2-fold), 405,900 tonnes of containerized cargo (-15.4%).

The port’s container throughput totaled 87,851 TEU, a 18.5-pct decrease year-on-year.
Kaliningrad is the western-most port of Russia, located at the South-Eastern part of the Baltic Sea at the mouth of Pregolia river. The port with the round-the-year navigation is connected with the sea by Kaliningrad Marine Canal. The port has 20 berths with total length exceeding 3 kilometers. The depth at 18 cargo berths is from 8 to 9 meters. The port is capable of handling coal, coke, ore, metal, ferrous alloys, scrap metal, grain, sugar, fertilizers (dry and liquid), containers, timber, foodstuffs, refrigerated cargo, paper, cellulose. Kaliningrad Sea Commercial Port OJSC accounts for over 70% of dry cargo handled by stevedoring companies operating in the territory of Kaliningrad port.
