In January-September, 2008, the port of St. Petersburg handled 46.242.8 million tonnes of cargo (+4%, year-on-year), Administration of Big Port of St. Petersburg reports. In the reported period, transshipment of dry bulk cargo amounted to 7.494.5 million tonnes (+2%, year-on-year) including 835,000 tonnes of ore (+40%, year-on-year), 1.574.6 million tonnes of coal and coke (-15%), 4.987.9 million tonnes of mineral fertilizers (+3%). Transshipment of dry loose cargo fell by 28% to 343,800 tonnes including 331,400 tonnes of grain (-30%), 9,500 tonnes of sugar and 2,900 tonnes of other dry loose cargo. 

In the 9-month period, the port handled 969,400 tonnes of timber (-50%) and 11.417.4 million tonnes of general cargo (+2%, year-on-year) including 3.040.3 million tonnes of ferrous metal (-7%), 1.079.2 million tonnes of non-ferrous metal (-3%), 1.594.0 million tonnes of scrap metal (-2%%). In the reported period, transshipment of unitized cargo amounted to 708,400 tonnes  (+68%, year-on-year), refrigerated cargo – 2.935.9 million tonnes (+3%), other general cargo – 2.059.6 million tonnes (+31%). In January-September, the port’s container throughput totaled 1,510,942 TEUS (+21%). Transshipment of oil cargo grew by 3 % to 11.493.3 million tonnes (+3%%). The port’s turnover of vessels amounted to 23,087 units.

Port of St. Petersburg is located on the islands in the mouth of the Neva-river, in the Neva Bay at the eastern side of the Gulf of Finland (Baltic Sea). The Big Port of St. Petersburg includes the mouth of the Neva-river, the Neva Bay, Kronshtadt and the complex of structures protecting St. Petersburg from flood (the dam). Icebreaker assistance is carried out within winter navigation.

In 2007, the port’s cargo turnover amounted to 59.6 million tonnes. According to the Administration of the Sea Port of St. Petersburg, about 30 stevedoring companies are engaged in transshipment of cargo in the port.
