OREANDA-NEWS. December 4, 2008. In January-November 2008, Vostochny Port OJSC handled 13.710 million tonnes of cargo (-10%, year-on-year), the company’s press center states. In the reported period, Universal Handling Terminal handled 1.936.3 million tonnes of different cargo (+89%, year-on-year). Specialized Coal Terminal handled 11.774.3 million tonnes of coal (-17%).

In November Vostochny Port handled 1.443.3 million tonnes of cargo (+32%, year-on-year) including 181,500 tonnes of cargo handled by Universal Handling Terminal (up 3.5 times) and 1.261.8 million tonnes of cargo handled by the Coal Terminal (+21%).

According to Sergei Kushnarev, the company Director General, “the result reflects the decrease of throughput which happened in summer when cargo owners failed to deliver earlier announced volumes of export coal though the port was ready to handle it.”

“General crisis in the global market also played its role as fluctuation of prices for metallurgical coal and other types of cargo also entailed turnover decrease. Nevertheless, despite the problems we faced at the end of the year we plan that the Coal Terminal will handle 13 million tones of cargo in 2008 while its design capacity is 12.5 million tonnes. All in all Vostochny Port plans to handle 14 million tonnes of export coal this year.
