OREANDA-NEWS. January 22, 2009. In 2008, the port of Tallinn handled 29.077 million tonnes of cargo (-19.3%, year-on-year), the port informs. In the reported period, transshipment of liquid bulk cargo totaled 20.526.8 million tonnes (-8.2%), general cargo – 571,800 tonnes (-23.8%), dry cargo – 2.978.2 million tonnes (-61.9%).

The port’s container throughput amounted to 180,927 TEU (at the level of 2007). Foreign export/import amounted to 22.633,2 million tonnes (-25.1%), including 3.053,8 million tonnes of export (+9.6%), 19,579.4 million tonnes of transit (-28.6%). Internal export/import grew by 10.7% to 6.269,1 million tonnes including 3.536.1 million tonnes of import (-3.1%), 2.733 million tonnes of transit (+35.7%). Domestic cargo transshipment amounted to 63,800 tonnes.

Commercial Seaport of Tallinn is a large cargo and passenger seaport located at the southern shore of the Tallinn Bay. It was founded in 1219. Tallinn is the third largest port of the Baltic Sea after St. Petersburg and Primorsk. The port consists of 5 port ones: Muuga, Old City Harbour, Paljassaare, Paldiski South and Saaremaa.
