OREANDA-NEWS. January 28, 2009. Engineers from SibCOTES have completed an energy audit and prepared a feasibility study to recommend first-priority measures for additional energy savings and improvements in production efficiency at the Verkhnetagilskaya GRES (power plant) in Sverdlovsk Region.

The Verkhnetagilskaya GRES was commissioned over 60 years ago and its equipment had outlived its usefulness. Many installations no longer support existing operating conditions, nor the requirements set by the current codes.

To solve these problems the engineers from SibCOTES recommended the following improvements:
Cycle arrangement modifications;
Changed start-up and shut down systems for the units;
Implementation of a new system for condensate gathering and polishing, changing of the existing system for boiler makeup, switching to more efficient technology for boiler mothballing;
Measures in terms of the turbine and boiler equipment (need to stop co-combustion of coal and gas in the boilers was validated);
Measures for flue gas cleaning to ensure standard environmental performance;
Rehabilitation of hydraulic ash handling system;
Range of control system measures to improve the system for engineering-and-economical performance recording.
To further improve engineering-and-economical performance at the Verkhnetagilskaya GRES, engineers from SibCOTES recommended techniques for the equipment to be used in the most efficient way.

The SibCOTES study report presents four major options for the power plant improvement concept depending on the fuel strategy chosen. These are construction of a natural gas fired combined-cycle plant, construction of pulverized coal-firing power generating units, replacement of lower pressure 90 ata equipment with more cost-efficient equipment within the existing main building, and decommissioning of out-of-date equipment.

The solutions proposed will enable the customer to greatly improve the efficiency and reliability of the power plant operation. In its detailed report SibCOTES provided specific engineering solutions, cost estimations, and engineering calculations for the improvement in equipment efficiency for all the measures considered.
