OREANDA-NEWS  On 05 March was announced, that Moldovan leu devaluated against U.S. dollar by 1,25% in January.

According to the data, published in the monthly Bulletin of the National Bank, as of late January 2009, in nominal terms Moldavian lei has depreciated against U.S. dollar by 1.25% and in real terms – by 1,64%, respectively . Thus, the official exchange rate of the Moldovan leu fell from 10.4002 leis for USD  1 in early January 2009 up to 10.5229 leis for USD  1 at the end of the month. At the same time, during January, rate of the Moldovan leu against euro has increased by 8,5%.

Thus, at the beginning of the month, the official rate of the Moldovan leu against euro made 14.7408 leis for 1 euro and at the end of the month - 13.4883 leis for 1 euro. In January, the official rate of Moldovan leu against Russian ruble grew from 0.3548 up to 0.2965 leis per 1 Russian ruble. The total amount of dollars purchased by the banks at the inter-bank market in January 2009 amounted to USD  194.2 mln or USD  41.7 mln more than in the previous month (USD  152.5 mln). In this period the volume of transactions carried out by the National Bank of Moldova at the inter-bank market totaled USD  88.65 mln, increasing by USD  38.42 mln as compared with December 2008.
