OREANDA-NEWS. March 16, 2009. A flood commission met at Smolensk Nuclear Power Plant on Mar 12 2009. The meeting was chaired by Chief Engineer of the plant Makhmud Akhmetkereev and was attended by representatives of the chief departments of the Emergency Ministry for Smolensk region Yuri Semenov, for Bryansk region Igor Glushenkov, the head of the Center for the Safety of Water Works of St.Petersburg VNII Vyacheslav Kuznetsov, specialists of Moskva-Oka Basin Department for Bryansk region, heads of workshops and departments of Smolensk NPP.

The head of Supporting Systems Department of Smolensk NPP Yuri Svinin said that Smolensk NPP had carried out a complex of measures for preparing its water works for safe discharge of flood water. “We have already inspected the structures and the electric parts of the lifting mechanisms of the flood gate and have conducted snow survey of the cooling pond. The complex of measures for discharging the flood consists of 32 tasks: half of them have already been fulfilled, the rest will be executed according to the schedule,” Svinin said.

The commission heard reports by specialists and came to conclusion that Smolensk NPP was ready to discharge flood water. All relevant measures are being carried out timely and effectively.
