OREANDA-NEWS. April 8, 2009. Presentation of Lithuania’s tourist possibilities was held today in Baku. Let’s remind that the capital of Lithuania, Vilnius, is Europe’s cultural capital 2009.

Nijole Kliokiene, Lithuania’s State Tourism Department, Director General, said this year Lithuania is celebrating two memorable events: 1000-year anniversary of mentioning Lithuania in chronicles (the year of 1009) and the title of Vilnyus as a European cultural capital 2009.

“We have been preparing for these events for two years. We hope that thanks to this, in 2009 the number of tourists visiting Lithuania will reach 15%,” Kliokiene emphasized.

She also noted that in 2008 Lithuania was visited by over 2 million tourists.

“I should note that there was a small number of tourists from Azerbaijan, just 1,000 people for the whole year. I link this with the fact there was not an appropriate contact between the two countries and direct transport communication up to Vilnyus. We hope this meeting would be useful since many companies have expressed interest in co-operation with Lithuania in the field of tourism.” Kliokiene added.

There are four large resorts in Lithuania in total – Palanga, Neringa, Druskininkai and Birshtonas.
