OREANDA-NEWS. April 20, 2009. A commission of the Federal Service for Ecological, Technological and Nuclear Supervision (Rostekhnadzor) has confirmed the safety and efficiency of Kursk Nuclear Power Plant as a result of a complex inspection held Apr 6–16 2009.

The commission comprised managers and specialists of the central office of Rostekhnadzor and its Northern European inter-regional territorial department for control of nuclear and radiation safety as well as the Scientific-Technical Center for Nuclear and Radiation Safety.

“Kursk NPP is highly efficient and safe. This is the result of the big work carried out by Energoatom Concern OJSC to modernize the plant and to enhance its safety,” says the deputy head of the Northern European inter-regional territorial department for control of nuclear and radiation safety Nikolay Afanasyev.

Afanasyev pointed out that in the last 12 months the number of events at Kursk NPP has significantly decreased. The technological discipline has been substantially improved.

No single violation of the federal rules and standards in the field of peaceful use of nuclear energy has been detected. The deficiencies revealed during the inspection were eliminated on the spot.

Safe production of electricity is the top priority of Energoatom Concern OJSC and its branch, Kursk Nuclear Power Plant. The modern systems of nuclear, radiation and ecological safety of the plant effectively protect the personnel, the population and the environment. The radiation background at Kursk NPP has been normal since the launch of the plant in 1976. The modernization program implemented by the plant has substantially enhanced its efficiency and safety.
