OREANDA-NEWS. April 27, 2009. The problem of climatic change cannot be resolved without the development of nuclear energy, President of Kurchatov Institute, Chairman of the Public Chamber of Russia Evgeny Velikhov said during Moscow-Delhi TV bridge. “Today we are witnessing the dawn of the nuclear renaissance and we can already see that we will not be able to resolve the problem of climatic change without wide use of nuclear energy,” Velikhov said.

Remarkable changes have taken place in the safety and design of nuclear power plants since the Chernobyl accident. “We have analyzed the consequences of this accident and have seen that its effects on human health (in the past 1990s) cannot be detected,” Velikhov said. He reminded the audience that the Chernobyl accident was preceded by an accident at Three Mile Island NPP in the United States and the experience of these accidents have had substantial effect on the culture of NPP construction and operation worldwide.
