OREANDA-NEWS. May 19, 2009. Moscow metro celebrates its 74-th anniversary on May 15, 2009.

It was on May 15, 1935, that trains entered passenger service on the first line of Moscow metro which joined Moscow citizens’ most favourite locations – Sokolniki and Park Kultury.

Moscow metro is still the most popular means of urban transport and it carries 56% of all passengers traveling in Moscow. The system carries over 2,5 billion passengers a year, which amounts to about one third of the world population.

Not only does Moscow metro provide quick, comfortable and safe passenger transportation, but it also tries to create a special atmosphere, making a passenger journey nice and enjoyable.

"Aquarelle" train with masterpieces from the Russian museum will start from Partizanskaya station (Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya line) on May, 13. Passengers will see works of Karl Brullov and Alexander Brullov, Isaak Levitan, Ilya Repin, Nikolay Rerikh and other world famous painters.

"Metro" gallery at Delovoy Tsentr station will host a new photo exhibition named "The young and the famous". The exhibition will feature unique photos of famous people and our young contemporaries such as Sergey Eizenshtein, Konstantin Khabensky, Oleg Tabakov, Ivan Okhlobystin, Igor Kurchatov. Yury Gagarin, Alexander Abdulova and Evgeny Plyushchenko.

The exhibition is dedicated to the Year of youth. Passengers will be able to see 30 photos of famous people: actors, sportsmen, scientists, artists, musicians, TV presenters and others – all made by leading photographers of the RIA Novosti news agency.
On May 15, passengers will hear congratulations on Moscow metro’s 74-th birthday at stations and on escalators and they will also be able to buy special tickets for two rides issued in limited edition.
