OREANDA-NEWS. May 27, 2009. Russia’s total uranium resources exceed 1,000,000 tons, Director General of Rosatom State Nuclear Energy Corporation Sergey Kiriyenko said while speaking at ATOMEXPO 2009.

“Due to the support of the Government and the Ministry of Natural Resources, in the last years we have substantially increased the amount of our extractable uranium reserves,” Kiriyenko said.

Today, Russia has 575,000 tons of extractable uranium and 875,000 tons of prospected uranium. So, with stored uranium inclusive, Russia’s total uranium reserves exceed 1,000,000 tons. Kiriyenko did not specify the amount of stored uranium but said that it would suffice for operating Russian existing and projected nuclear reactors for 60 years.

“Nevertheless, our key goal is to enlarge our uranium resources and to develop new deposits. In 2009 the Government has allocated 15bln RUR for building an infrastructure for the development a uranium deposit in Southern Yakutia,” Kiriyenko said.
