OREANDA-NEWS. July 16, 2009. In the first half of 2009, Ventspils port (Latvia) handled 14.84 million tonnes of cargo (-0.7%, year-on-year). In July the port handled 2.39 million tonnes of cargo (+9.5%, year-on-year).

In the 6-month period, transshipment of liquid bulk cargo increased by 5.6% to 10.34 mln t, loose dry cargo – fell by 5.5% to 3.84 million tonnes, general cargo – by 39.1% to 666,000 tonnes. Transshipment of oil products totaled 9.47 million tonnes, crude – 454,000 tonnes, coal – 2.97 million tonnes, wood chips – 219,000 tonnes.

Ferry services of the port carried 6,120 passengers, 2,684 passenger cars and 15,678 units of cargo totaling 410,800 tonnes.

In 2009 the port pland to handle 29 million tonnes of cargo.

Ventspils port is located near Venta river. There are terminals for loading and unloading of crude and oil products, liquid chemicals and fertilizers, metal and coal, timber and fish, containers and Ro-Ro trailers. Liquid cargo area has 9 berths ranging in depth between 11.5 and 17.5 m. These berths can accommodate AFRAMAX type vessels of 150 000 DWT. In 2008, the port handled 28.57 million tonnes of cargo.
