OREANDA-NEWS. August 28, 2009. The decision of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine enacted by Yuschenko’s decree says that such a document might be aimed at ensuring the mid-term prospects of uranium mining for the needs of Ukraine’s nuclear industry.

Ukraine mines uranium but has no capacities for its enrichment. The whole fuel for the country’s NPPs is supplied by Russian TVEL Corporation.

The current fuel supply contract is valid till 2010. The new long-term agreement (till 2026) was supposed to be signed by July 15 but has not been yet. In late July Ukrainian Energoatom company said that the preparation of the contract was at the final stage.

Ukraine has four nuclear power plants – Zaporizhye, Rovno, Khmelnitsky and South Ukraine – with a total capacity of 13.835GW (almost half of the country’s power generating capacities).
