OREANDA-NEWS. On 31 August 2009 COMSTAR – United TeleSystems (JSC COMSTAR-UTS, LSE: CMST), the leading provider of integrated telecommunication solutions in Russia and the CIS, announced accomplishment of building and launch for operation of microwave link (MWL) in Krasnodar Region to connect Sochi and Adler.

COMSTAR-UTS South branch started building backbone transport link between Adler and Sochi in 2008; it was commissioned for operation in Q2 2009. Over that period, a microwave communication link was built based on the synchronous digital hierarchy (SDH) networking standard using STM-1 (Synchronous Transfer Mode) technology to ensure data transfer channel overall capacity of up to 155 Mbps. The microwave link span is 22 km long.

Adler – Sochi backbone link has a hybrid structure: part of it is a fiber-optic link, while the other part is a wireless communication link based on PASOLINK digital microwave communication systems manufactured by NEC.

 “Our network laid in one of the most promising regions in the South of Russia makes it possible for us to increase data traffic and rate for Sochi – Adler span, increase the number of communication channels to connect other regional operators, and to start building metro network based on the fiber-to-the-building (FTTB) technology in Adler region of Sochi”, said Viktor Koresh, COMSTAR-UTS Group Regional Development Vice President, General Director of ZAO COMSTAR-Regions.

In perspective, the company intends to use its own infrastructure to launch mass provision of Triple Play services (telephony, broadband Internet access and pay-TV) for private subscribers, as well as highly demanded services for Virtual Private Network, VPN arrangement, and lease of their own communication channels to corporate customers of Adler region of Sochi.

It is necessary to remind that earlier COMSTAR-UTS has already begun provision of comprehensive communication services to individuals residing in the central district of Sochi based on an existing multi-service fiber-optic FTTB network.
