OREANDA-NEWS. October 05, 2009. S7, the largest Russian domestic carrier by the number of passengers in 2008, duly presented the plan for monitoring, reporting and control of greenhouse gas emissions to the European Union representatives, reported the press-centre of S7.

In February 2009 the European Commission included aviation into the emission trading system. Since January 1, 2012 each airline operating flights to Europe shall receive emissions quota proportional to its air traffic performance. Each airline shall have the right to a certain free emission quota.

“S7 fleet is totally complying with new environmental standards that the European Union established for all airlines flying to Europe. In 2009 the fuel consumption decreased by 40% compared to the previous year. S7 has already launched a major fleet upgrade program for several years. In 2008 the company stopped operating low fuel efficiency aircraft made in the Soviet Union. Today S7 has the most modern and "fresh" fleet in Russia. The aircraft average age is nine years. In 2010 the aircraft average age will be only six years after the projected removal of Airbus A310 Aircraft from operation“, - said Vadim Besperstov, Commercial Director of S7.

The monitoring plan is the first stage of S7 involvement into the emission trading system. Since the beginning of 2010 air carriers will carry out annual monitoring of emissions and present the report to the European Union.
