OREANDA-NEWS. January 11, 2010. President Victor Yushchenko wrote letters to National Bank Chairman Volodymyr Stelmakh and Accounting Chamber Chairman Valentyn Symonenko. In the leeters President Yushchenko drew the abovementioned officials’ attention to critical situation with payments for Russian gas in 2009 and rationality of state funds use in that field, reported the Official website president.gov.ua.

According to President Yushchenko due to provisions of 2009 gas agreements, which had been signed by the Government, Ukraine has found itself in the situation when its international image as gas transit partner and uninterrupted supply of gas to both our state and our European partners are threatened again.

The Government, according to Victor Yushchenko, failed to conduct timely encashment of Naftogaz of Ukraine obligations, thus making the company lack US900 million it has to pay to Russian side before January 1, 2010.

Therefore the President requested National Bank Chairman to conduct urgent meeting of National Bank Managing Board and discuss resolving the issue through buying Government securities for the sum needed and inform him on the decision before 20:00 January 6.

In the letter to the Accounting Chamber Chairman President Yushchenko requested him to inspect the use of funds by Naftogaz of Ukraine it had received from the Government.
