OREANDA-NEWS. January 18, 2010. Light and heavy launchers Angara, as well as mid-class Soyuz-2, will provide launch services for military satellites in the nearest future, Russian Space Force Commander Major General Oleg Ostapenko told mass media.

According to him, Angara space rocket system at Plesetsk is not only a new launcher, but new modern space port infrastructure. Under Federal Special Program “Evolution of Russian Space Ports, 2006-2015”, 80% of the Angara launch pad was mounted by the end of 2009. Also, two boiler houses were repaired, and a military hostel was opened.

Development of the Angara space launch system is an objective of high importance on the governmental level. Customers of the system are Roscosmos and Ministry of Defense. Khrunichev Space Center is the Angara prime contractor responsible for the rocket development, manufacturing and test, as well as for the whole universal space system.

Angara will use ecology-friendly propellant components: oxygen and kerosene. This is the main benefit of the rocket. The engine to be applied, 14D23/RD-0124А, provides the highest thrust specific momentum in the world.
