OREANDA-NEWS. March 30, 2010. In January-February 2010 the port of Liepaja handled 708,2 thousand tons of cargo, i.e. by 18,0 % more than in corresponding period of 2009.
In terms of different cargoes, turnover of bulk and dry cargo increased by 13,4 % to 318,0 thousand tons; whereof increase was recorded in handling figures for construction materials (increase by +123,9 %, 17,4 thousand tons handled), grain (increase by +20,0 %, 318,0 thousand tons handled) and peat (increase by +4,4 %, 3,8 thousand tons handled). Handling of metals stopped (in total 12,9 thousand tons were handled in two month of 2009), decrease was reported in handling of wooden pellets  (drop by -36,5 %, 12,0 thousand tons handled).  

Turnover of general cargo amounted to 269,0 thousand tons, i.e. by 5,0 % more than in corresponding period of 2009. The growth in turnover of this cargo resulted from increase in handling figures for timber (158,4 thousand tons handled, positive change by +186,1 %) and metals (93,6 thousand tons handled, positive change by +19,5 %).
Handling of liquid cargo, in comparison to January-February 2010, increased by 89,9 % to 121,2 thousand tons; whereof the biggest growth rates were recorded in handling figures for chemical products (19,4 thousand tons handled, positive change by +259,3 %) and oil products (82,9 thousand tons handled, positive change by +178,7 %). Turnover of crude oil dropped by 27,4% and amounted to 18,4 thousand tons.
