OREANDA-NEWS. July 21, 2010. Around 30 water sources have been restored in Belarus as part of the EU-UNDP project aimed at minimizing consequences of the Chernobyl catastrophe in Belarus, said Vladislav Khilkevich, Communications Associate of the UNDP Office in Belarus.

As part of the project 27 wells in five communities of the Buda-Koshelevo Region, Gomel Oblast have been restored. The wells had been chosen taking into account their mud accumulation, derived silt, lack of roofs and their proximity to elderly residents.

Experts have analyzed the water in the wells before and after the repairs. The results indicate that the water meets all the standards.

The EU-UNDP project had allocated over Br5 million for carrying out the local initiative. Thanks to this as well as active efforts of the local authorities around 2,000 rural Belarusians, including children and teenagers, will now drink pure water, said the source.
