OREANDA-NEWS. August 26, 2010. JSC FGC UES has completed testing of new-generation of reactive power compensator of STATKOM type. The innovative equipment shall be installed at substation 330/400 kV Vyborgskaya (Leningradskaya area) until the end of 2010, this shall increase operation reliability of back-to-back station which connects power systems of Finland and Russia.

The static reactive power compensator based on transistor-type voltage transformer (STATKOM) with capacity 50 Mvar is a unique Russian development performed by JSC NTC of power industry (100% affiliate to JSC FGC UES) in cooperation with NPC Enerkom-Servis. This device is purposed to sustain the required level and quality of voltage in electric grids, increase of capacity of power transmission lines.

Testing of the new device was performed at JSC NTC of power industry at a unique testing board which allows testing reactive power compensators of various voltage classes with capacity up to 100 Mvar. During the tests the transistor control system was checked for noise-resistance, full testing of STATKOM was performed in nominal load and overload modes. As a result all technical characteristics of the new equipment have been confirmed before its installation at the acting power object.

Installation of STATKOM at substation 330/400 kV Vyborgskaya shall allow for increasing of back-to-back station’s operation reliability at the expense of replacement of used reactive power synchronous compensators. Development of a new device shall open ample opportunities to create a number of innovative systems to compensate reactive power and control power flows.
