OREANDA-NEWS. September 14, 2010. Readers of Lonely Planet, the world’s most popular travel guide, have voted the Trans-Siberian Railway the "Greatest Journey" in an online poll. The results of the Lonely Planet Awards 2010 are published in the Lonely Planet Magazine’s September edition., reported the press-centre of RZD.

Further details on the nominees and voting can be found on the Lonely Planet website: www.lonelyplanet.com/awards.

The Trans-Siberian Railway stretches over 9,288.2 km, making it the longest railway line in the world, passing through 12 regions and 87 cities of Russia, and crossing seven time zones.

Fourteen of the cities on the Trans-Siberian are regional capitals, full of cultural sights and history. This creates a strong groundwork for developing railway tourism as a travel choice.

Travellers on the Trans-Siberian take in the unique Circum-Baikal Railway – a monumental work of engineering art, and one of the most picturesque sights around Lake Baikal.

The modernization work carried out in the 2000s turned the Trans-Siberian into a powerful dual-system electrified rail line, equipped with modern information and communication links. It is the only continuation of Pan-European Transport Corridor II, linking Europe and Asia.
