OREANDA-NEWS. October 11, 2010. In Wiesbaden (Germany) Convention on construction and operation of the Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research in Europe (FAIR) was signed. On behalf of the Russian Federation Government the Convention was signed by Deputy General Director of Rosatom State Corporation P.G.Schedrovitsky.

The FAIR project is that of the unique in the world accelerator research complex of the new generation providing unique opportunities for carrying out scientific research in most important directions of the modern science and technologies.

A distinctive feature of the FAIUR complex is the presence of high-intensity primary and secondary beams of stable and radioactive nuclei as well as beams of antiprotons 100 – 10000 fold exceeding all the existing beams in terms of intensity. Participation in Fair will give Russia the opportunity to acquire new and unique knowledge for a long time about structure and the properties of the matter and high density of energy in the substance required for establishing a scientific and technological base of the nuclear power industry of the new generation as well as for expansion of the sphere of nuclear technologies utilization and search of advanced methods of the nucleus energy use.

The Russian specialists took part in the work at the project almost from the very beginning. Over 500 scientists from 25 leading Russian scientific centers actively participated both in developing the project of the accelerator complex itself and in preparation of scientific experiments with ions and antiproton beams, development and invention of new detectors.

The FAIR project is not only of a great scientific and practical interest for the member countries. It gives a new impetus not only to development of the fundamental research but a number of high technologies including superconducting magnet technologies for the FAIR synchrotron rings, electron cooling technology, etc.

The FAIR project will give a new impetus to education of young scientists, engineers, development of information technologies as well as further integration of the project member countries into the world and European scientific and technological community.

The Convention was signed by Germany, Russia, France, Spain, India, Poland, Sweden, Finland, Romania and Slovenia. Another 6 countries – Great Britain, Italy, Slovakia, China, Austria and Greece intend to join the Convention during the year.

For the purpose of the project implementation a limited liability company called Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research in Europe (FAIR) was established. The share of the company owned by Rosatom State Corporation is equal to 17.45%. The Scientific Director and Chairman of the Board of the company is RAS corresponding member B.Yu. Sharkov. Deputy General Director of Rosatom State Corporation P.G.Schedrovitsky and a RAS Presidium Member, Academician-Secretary of RAS division V.Ye. Fortov acted as Rosatom representatives at the company Participants’ Meeting.
