OREANDA-NEWS. December 07, 2010. The Bolshoi Ice Palace will be certified for hockey in compliance with the requirements of the BREEAM international quality assessment system.

This facility will find application for all the most advanced technologies, energy-efficiency-wise: energy-saving lamps, infrared motion sensors and water meters, self-regulating heating and ventilation processes. The unit with the highest power consumption is the cooling center, and it will operate with a performance ratio close to 100%. All the excess heat generated by the center in the process of ice fields frosting will be used to heat the water, the floors, and the air coming to the premises from outside.

The green standards of the Olympic facilities will regulate in the first place the faзade glazing. Glass with special coating will be used in the construction of the Bolshoi Ice Palace dome, which retains heat inside in winter, and blocks it from the outside in summer. The collected and filtered rainwater will be used for flowerbed care and for cleaning of the premises.

The first steps to this goal were made as early as the last year, when the site in the Imeretinskaya Lowland on the Black Sea shore was in course of preparation. The builders have treated the plants and animals with care and respect. Dendrological research was carried out; the fertile layer was removed and carefully deposited on a special site protected from washout and weathering. When the construction is completed, the reclaimed soil will be returned to the territory around the Bolshoi Ice Palace.

The BREEAM rating system includes an assessment of the building’s compliance with a multitude of strict norms. For instance, these include the accessibility of the facility for bicycle riders or public transport, which is less harmful than personal vehicles, the recovery of the territory after the construction works completion, the reclamation and the greenery planting. They also include optimized energy consumption and the use of alternative energy sources, the reduction of water use volumes, the possibility of control over HVAC and lighting systems. And finally, they concern the creation of best conditions for the solar lighting rooms, the creation of a large number of open spaces and free volumes, the possibility of waste and garbage recycling, the use of quickly renewable materials.
