OREANDA-NEWS. May 04, 2011. Cargo throughput of SE Yuzhny Merchant Sea Port (Odessa region, Ukraine) in January-April 2011 increased by 19.9% compared with the same period of 2010, to 7,275,600 tons. During this period, the port handled 296 vessels and 59,554 rail cars, the state-owned enterprise said.

In the reporting period Port of Yuzhny transshipped 3,790,600 tons of transit cargo, a 66.8 percent surge from the same period of 2010.

In April, cargo volume handled at the port totaled 1,997,000 tons, or 48.4% more than in April 2010. Monthly volume of transit cargo rose as much as 2.7 times to 1,194,400 tons. The port handled 77 ships and 17,470 rail cars.

State-run Yuzhny Merchant Sea Port founded in 1978 is located on the northwest coast of the Black Sea, in the ice-free Small Adzhalyksk (Grygoryivsky) estuary, 30 km northeast of Odessa. The vessels arriving / departing the port via a 3km-long 14m-deep canal need pilotage service. In 2010, Yuzhny port’s cargo throughput was up 2.1% year-over-year to 18.22 million.
