OREANDA-NEWS. May 30, 2011. Tata Power, India’s largest integrated private power utility, announced the successful completion of the critical steam blowing process at Unit 1 of 4,000MW Mundra Ultra Mega Power Project (UMPP) being set up by Coastal Gujarat Power (CGPL), a wholly owned subsidiary of the company. The boiler light-up and steam blowing of steam lines was completed within 39 days from start of the process.

Steam blowing of the boiler is an important activity undertaken prior to commissioning of a new unit or for initiation of turbine powering. Hence, completion of steam blowing is a significant step towards achieving synchronisation of Unit 1 of the Mundra UMPP.

Under this process, steam blows are used to clear / remove any foreign matter / particles / debris and surface scale that have the potential to damage turbine blades during plant operation. Sufficient boiler pressure is maintained to ensure that the piping experiences dynamic pressure to ensure adequate cleaning.

Speaking on the significant development, Alok Kanagat, executive director, CGPL, said, “We are happy to achieve this significant milestone to facilitate commissioning of Unit 1. The completion of steam blowing signifies the readiness of Unit 1 for starting the synchronisation process.”
