OREANDA-NEWS. May 31, 2011. Foreign supplies of Belarusian potash fertilizers via Russian exclave region of Kaliningrad are not feasible because of high logistic costs, a source in Belneftekhim concern stated.

The Russian side insists on stepping up efforts to implement the bilateral agreement on transshipment of fertilizers via Kaliningrad.

“It will be problematic to fulfill this task because of the high level of costs,” the source said, adding that not only transport costs were to blame, but also high transshipment fees in Kaliningrad port, standing almost 50% above the fees charged by Ventspils port.

Belarus has attempted a few times to have a trial delivery of fertilizers via Kaliningrad, but each time it was postponed.

Kaliningrad has a capacity to transship up to 1 million tonnes of Belarusian fertilizers annually.
