OREANDA-NEWS. September 14, 2011. Tata Relief Committee (TRC), formed by Tata Steel and other Tata  Group companies based in Jamshedpur to help people during major disasters, has  come to the assistance of the flood-affected people of Odisha.

TRC, in collaboration with the district administration, has  commenced relief operations in various flood-affected areas of Jajpur district since  yesterday.

In the first phase, food packets, drinking water packets and  candles are being distributed to the flood-affected people in the inundated  areas.

A 10-member team of TRC and Tata Steel officials are undertaking  the relief distribution work in the affected areas in Jajpur district.

TRC  has been operating in Odisha since 1961 and has been a friend of the people of  the State at times of their need whenever they have been affected by natural  calamities. The committee’s rehabilitation, restoration, reconstruction and  relief operations encompass the immediate as well as long-term needs of the  affected people.

The  month of October 1999 proved to be catastrophic for coastal Odisha, which was  hit by the Super Cyclone, rendering thousands homeless. At that time, TRC, besides  distributing immediate relief material to more than one lakh families, built  435 houses and 24 school-cum-cyclone shelters for the affected.

It  provided relief to more than five lakh families and helped bring them back to  mainstream society whenever severe floods affected the State between 1999 and  2008. Tata Relief Committee has been recognised by Odisha State Disaster  Mitigation Authority (OSDMA) for its outstanding contribution during flood  relief operations in 2008.
