OREANDA-NEWS. October 17, 2011. US stocks rose on Friday with Oil&Gas (+3.57%) and Basic Materials (+2.57%) as leaders. S&P 500 index jumped 1.74% to 1224.6, Russell 2000 Index – added 1.95%. VIX slumped 8.01% to 28.24.  Advanced Retail Sales rose 1.1% in September, well above consensus forecast of a 0.7% rise.

EURUSD closed near 1.383.

Asian stocks rose on Monday as Europe bail-out hopes reemerged. Shanghai stock indices added 0.35% on average. S&P/ASX was up by 1.66%. Korean Kospi added 1.62%. Nikkei was up by 1.55%.

The European stock indices futures rose in the morning - Dow Jones Stoxx 50 futures was up by 1.66% while Dax futures was up by 1.68%. S&P futures added 0.68%.

In the US, Import prices, Empire Manufacturing Index for October, Industrial Production for September will be in focus today.

Citi, Wells Fargo, Halliburton are to present quarterly earnings reports.
